The Stipendium Hungaricum 2023 and Chinese Government Scholarships – Open calls for Application

As the holidays slowly approach, the Department of Higher Education and Training (Department) would like to notify you of a number of international scholarship opportunities that are currently open for applications, including our flagship programmes.

The Stipendium Hungaricum for South Africans 2023 – which will now be accepting applications for Medicine (offered only at University of Pecs or University of Debrecen) and the Chinese Government Scholarship 2023.

The Hungarian Government is offering 100 scholarships to South African students to study at participating public universities in Hungary – at Bachelor’s, Master’s, One-Tier Master’s and Doctoral levels with short term mobility opportunities or Exchange Programmes ( 1 or 2 semesters) for registered Master or Doctoral candidates.

The deadline for submitting applications is 15 January 2023, this includes both full degree programmes and partial/exchange programmes.

The scholarship will cover the following:

The Hungarian Government

  • Tuition fees
  • Monthly stipend
  • University accommodation or a contribution towards private accommodation
  • Medical insurance 

The Department (subject to the availability of funding)

  • International travel
  • Contribution towards monthly stipend
  • Settlement allowance
  • Pre-departure orientation
  • SAQA verification of qualification

The Chinese Government is offering scholarships for South African students to study at Chinese institutions starting in the 2023/24 academic year for Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD and non-degree Chinese language studies.

The deadline for submitting applications is 23 January 2023.


The scholarship will offer the following :

  • Monthly stipend
  • Once-off settlement allowance
  • Visa costs
  • Compulsory orientation programme before departure.

*Please note that the above is travel to China will be subject to imposed travel restrictions and the Department will only book flights for students when safety and seamless travel of students can be assured.

  •    Full tuition fees coverage;
  •    Living expenses of SEK 11,000/month (~R18 000);
  • Travel grant of SEK 15,000 (~ R24 600) for the entire scholarship period – this will be paid upon arrival in Sweden, therefore recipients will need to pay for their own flight to Sweden;
  • Insurance against illness and accident;
  • Membership of the SI Network for Future Global Leaders (NFGL) – a platform to grow your network and experience, while in Sweden;
  • Lifelong membership of the SI Alumni Network – a platform for further professional development and to stay in touch.
Swedish university application fee, to up to fifteen (15) qualifying scholarship applicants 16 January 2023 : Last day for submission of Swedish university applications and DHET application for payment of university application fee.

 

10-28 February 2023 – Submission of Swedish Institute Scholarship application

SWITZERLAND: Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships 2023-2024 PhD, Postdoctoral, Research Fellow Open to all academic fields of research.
  • Stipend: Postdoctoral research: CHF 3500/month;
  • Stipend: PhD and Research scholarship: CHF 1920/month;
  • Mandatory Swiss health insurance;
  • One-time lump sum of CHF 300.-with the first grant payment to help for payment of the housing deposit;
  • –   Flight allowance (lump sum) for a ticket back to their country of origin (provided at the end of the scholarship).

  • The Swedish Institute Scholarships for Global Professionals on the 23rd November 2022 – (registration closed – the session recording will be available tomorrow)
  • The Chinese Government Scholarship on the 1st December 2022 – Register here
