University of the Western Cape Joins Prestigious Matariki Network
In a historic move that underscores its growing global influence, the University of the Western Cape (UWC) has officially joined the Matariki Network of Universities, becoming its eighth member.
The Matariki Network of Universities, known for its commitment to excellence in research, education, and community engagement, includes some of the world’s leading institutions.
UWC’s inclusion in this group is a testament to the University’s dedication to advancing social justice, inclusive education and global collaboration.
The formal signing ceremony took place at Uppsala University in Sweden on 4 September 2024, marking the first time since its inception that the Matariki Network welcomed a new member.
The signing ceremony, held during the annual meeting of the Matariki Network’s Executive Heads and Leads, was a significant event.
Professor Patrick Deane, Chair of the Matariki Network, and Professor Anders Hagfeldt, Vice-Chair, joined UWC’s Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tyrone Pretorius, in signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that officially confirmed UWC’s membership.
Professor Deane expressed his enthusiasm for UWC’s inclusion: “Since its founding, the Matariki Network has brought its member institutions together around shared priorities and a commitment to mutual support. As it moves deeper into its second decade, and with renewed and enlarged strategic purpose, this group of critical university friends is delighted to welcome the University of the Western Cape to membership.”
Reflecting on the significance of this new partnership, Professor Pretorius invoked the wisdom of the late Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, UWC’s former Chancellor, who often reminded the University community of the interconnectedness of all people.
“I am because you are. We are because they are,” said Prof Pretorius, highlighting how the philosophy of Ubuntu resonates with the core values of both UWC and the Matariki Network.
“For UWC, this partnership is about harnessing the power of collaboration to achieve far more together than we ever could alone,” said Prof Pretorius.
He emphasised that UWC is eager to contribute its unique perspectives, particularly in social justice and inclusive education, while also learning from the diverse experiences and expertise within the Matariki Network.
UWC’s membership in the Network represents a strategic commitment to fostering global collaboration in education and research. By joining this network, UWC positions itself to be more significant in addressing global challenges through partnerships that transcend borders.
Professor Pretorius articulated this vision: “At UWC, we believe in the African proverb: ‘If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.’ We are joining the Matariki Network with great excitement and anticipation.”
The partnership is expected to open new avenues for collaboration in academia and areas that can drive positive societal change.
UWC’s focus on social justice, equity, and inclusion aligns with the Matariki Network’s mission to promote a global understanding of complex issues through research and education.
Furthermore, the partnership is seen as an opportunity to enhance UWC’s global impact, build stronger international relationships, and create a better world.
