Joseph Cloete brings both scientific expertise and leadership experience to the International Relations Office, where he currently serves as the Research Assistant.

Joseph first joined the IRO as an intern, gaining valuable exposure to academic diplomacy and institutional engagement before transitioning
into his current portfolio role. In this capacity, he supports the coordination of international delegations, assists with the organization of high-level events and conferences, provides protocol support, contributes to research on global higher education trends, and helps strengthen partnerships with universities and organizations worldwide.

He is pursuing his MSc in Applied Geology, specializing in the study of geologic hydrogen as a renewable enErgy resource for South Africa. His research explores innovative approaches to clean energy within the context of the country’s geological potential. Beyond his academic work, Joseph is an active student leader. He serves as President of the GoldenKey International Honour Society UWC Chapter, as well as President of the American Association of
Petroleum Geologists UWC Chapter. In these roles, he has led initiatives that connect students, academics, and professionals through knowledge sharing, outreach, and academic excellence.

Through his combined work in science, internationalization, and leadership, Joseph contributes to strengthening UWC’s global engagement and its vision for sustainable development and academic collaboration.
