SANORD 2024 Conference: A Successful Handing Over of the Torch and Reflections and closing remarks
As the 16th Annual SANORD Conference hosted by the University of the Western Cape (UWC) came to a close, a momentous transition took place, marking both the end of one chapter and the beginning of another for the SANORD network.
Prof. Jose Frantz, Chair of the Scientific Committee and Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation at UWC, officially handed over the responsibilities of hosting the next SANORD conference to Bjarke Paarup from Aarhus University in Denmark. This symbolic gesture not only reflects the collaborative spirit of SANORD but also ensures the continued growth and global reach of the network.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Laverne Samuels, Chair of the SANORD Board, took the stage to reflect on the success of the conference and the community spirit that defines SANORD. Dr. Samuels’ words highlighted the unique strength of the diversity within the SANORD network, which he emphasized is not just an aspiration, but a living reality that enriches every interaction and initiative across the globe.
He shared,
“The diversity within the SANORD network is not just a goal, but a lived reality that enriches every interaction and initiative. From the fjords of Norway to the savannas of South Africa, the varied backgrounds of SANORD members contribute to a vibrant tapestry of ideas, experiences, and perspectives.”
Dr. Samuels’ remarks also stressed how this diversity, rather than being a challenge, serves as a catalyst for community-building within SANORD. He explained how students, researchers, and professionals from all corners of the world find common ground, forming lasting friendships and professional relationships that transcend geographical boundaries.
“Students and young researchers from different corners of the globe find common ground, forging lasting friendships and professional relationships that transcend geographical boundaries,” Dr. Samuels added.
As the SANORD community prepares for its next chapter with Aarhus University as Conference host, Dr. Samuels extended his deepest thanks to all who participated, and especially to Prof. Frantz and her team, whose leadership has been vital in the success of this year’s conference. He also expressed his excitement for the future collaborations and projects that will continue to grow from this year’s event.
The handover to Aarhus University is a moment of pride for the SANORD network, ensuring that the spirit of collaboration and innovation will continue to thrive globally. With a renewed sense of purpose and a strengthened commitment to inclusivity and global dialogue, SANORD looks forward to another successful conference in Denmark.
